One of India's holiest pilgrimage sites and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, Kamakhya Temple sits majestically atop Nilachal Hill. The Navagraha Temple on Chitrachal Hill is one of the most unique temples in India — dedicated to the nine celestial bodies (Navagrahas). Built by the Ahom king Rajeswar Singha, the nine lingas are arranged in an astronomically precise formation. The hilltop offers lovely views of Guwahati city, making it a wonderful early-morning visit.

One of the largest zoos in Northeast India, spread over 432 acres and home to the prized Indian one-horned rhinoceros, clouded leopard, hoolock gibbon, and over 900 animals. The botanical garden section hosts rare medicinal plants and orchids of Assam. A wonderful half-day outing for families and wildlife enthusiasts.

Just 48 km from Guwahati, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary boasts the highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses in the world. Jeep and elephant safaris let you get incredibly close to these magnificent animals, wild buffaloes, leopards, and a stunning variety of migratory birds. A protected Ramsar wetland on the outskirts of Guwahati, Deepor Beel is a paradise for birdwatchers. Over 200 species of migratory and resident birds converge here from October to March, including the rare Greater Adjutant Stork. Named after the 15th-century Assamese saint-scholar, this magnificent cultural complex is the soul of Assam. Located in the heart of the city, the Assam State Museum houses an outstanding collection of sculptures, manuscripts, coins, textiles, and tribal artefacts spanning 2,000 years of Assamese history. The natural history section, archaeological finds from Tezpur and Sibsagar, and the rare palm-leaf manuscripts make this a quiet but deeply rewarding 2-hour visit.

No visit to Guwahati is complete without a cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra — one of Asia's greatest rivers. The sunset cruise from Fancy Bazar Ghat paints the river gold as the sun dips behind the Nilachal Hills. With Kamakhya Temple silhouetted against the sky and the river shimmering in twilight, this is the single most photographed moment in Guwahati.

Just 32 km from Guwahati lies Hajo — a remarkable town where Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim pilgrims share the same sacred hill. The Hayagriva Madhab Temple, Kedar Temple, Poa Mecca (a Muslim shrine said to have a footprint of the Prophet), and a Tibetan monastery co-exist in perfect harmony.
